For would be writers, May 3, 2008
By Midwest Book Review (Oregon, WI USA)
A different kind of thief that isn't heard about too often -
the ones in the book business. "I Don't Want to be a Pirate
- Writer, maybe" is Author Robert S. Swiatek's account of
his adventures with a certainly treacherous industry of books.
Covering all the joys, disappointments and hemorrhoids that
he as a writer has had to deal with during his career, while still
keeping a positive and upbeat demeanor about it all and
encouraging aspiring writers not to give up and keep up their
efforts. "I Don't Want to be a Pirate- Writer, maybe" is highly
recommended
for would be writers and a must have for
community library collections catering to them.

I Don't Want to be a Pirate - Writer, maybe

published in March 2008

If you think being a pirate is tough, try being a writer.

At the end of 2005, I had the pleasure of conducting a work

session on writing humor at the Albright-Knox Art Gallery
in Buffalo. This endeavor got me started on this book, which
is my journey as a writer, with all the joys, disappointments,
experiences and hemorrhoids brought on through dealings
with agents, book stores, publishers and marketers. Written
to enlighten authors and aspiring writers with insight into
the publishing business, it is also meant to give them and
everyone else a few laughs.

I just had a look at the sample in your new

A very funny book of the author's endeavors in his life as a writer, I especially
liked the humorous part - as fate would have it - forcing him to be creative in
seven minutes on a cooking show on WNED. I can't wait to read the next book.

The best thing about any of Bob's books . . . you can read them in a
few hours. I Don't Want to be a Pirate is a humorous journey
into the author's mind. He allows us into his head, giving us his
animated thoughts about the characters in the publishing industry.
Bob's animated, characterization of the publishing and promotion
world is priceless. Glad I'm not an author.

Writer Bob Tells It Like It Is, August 10, 2008
Bob is always fun. He has a way with words. He has a way with stories,
especially stories full of personal anecdotes and offbeat happenings.

But there is nothing more fun than reading a writer trying to explain
how the hell the universe of writing and publishing actually works. It
is like trying to grasp string theory with quantum chopsticks.

This memoir relating the arduous adventure of thoughts on their way
to the bookshelf is a must read for all Swiatek fans. You'll laugh, sure,
but mainly you'll come away with a huge appreciation of just how
much work goes in to making those pithy comments.

I know being a pirate would have been a lot easier, but
writing is where the real adventures are.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book by Robert S Swiatek. It's full of information
for the aspiring writer and presented with lots of humor. It also gives a non-writer
(like me) a look into all of the ups and downs that go into writing and publishing a
book. It has given me an appreciation for what a writer must go through to get
published and then to get their books sold and read! This book may change
my mind about reading only what I have seen on the Top Ten list!!

A Writer's Journey on Treacherous Seas
Robert Swiatek set sail over thirty years: his mission to write and publish a book.
What transpired was a series of false starts, sharp turns, harrowing stops and, in
fact, several books with very amusing titles. In a conversational amusing tone, Mr.
Swiatek relates his journey and passes along what he has learned: have fun, don't
give up, learn from your mistakes, and read, read, read. Great advice for those
who wish to write, publish and sell books!
